Tour the Best Lexington Horse Farms

Kentucky is the land of the horse, and Lexington is its capital! As you drive into the city, you'll no doubt see horse farms throughout Bluegrass Country.

If you want to experience Lexington to the fullest, you need to visit some of the local horse farms. You'll learn how horse farmers seek to raise healthy, beautiful horses fit for racing. Because an article on every farm would be nearly the length of a novel, we'd like to focus on a few of the best farm experiences you can have.

Address: 3301 Versailles Rd, Lexington, KY

This beautiful property was refurbished in 1996, and hearkens back to the designs of the early 20th century. Calumet Farm raises Calumet horses (no surprise there) which is the ideal racing horse breed. You'll be able to meet their stallions at the stables onsite, and if you're in the market you can buy one!

Sprawling across 1200 acres, Spendthrift Farm is the perfect place to go for a horse farm tour. Not only will you learn the history of thoroughbred breeding, but you'll be able to see all the Kentucky Derby superstar horses that Spendthrift has raised.

You have a few different options for tours:
  • If all you want is a quick run-through of the horse farm, you can book the Shuttle Experience for $35.
  • For a more in depth look at the history and stallions themselves, you can pay $45.
  • For the train ride experience through the farm, you'll pay $53.

Address: 3333 Bowman Mill Rd, Lexington, KY

Jonabell Farm has so many different ways to see its horses! The most popular tour is of the Darley Stallion Complex, where you'll have a shot to learn about the horse breeding business and meet the winners of the Derby that have come from Jonabell Farm.

For something a little different, you can instead book a tour to meet the mares and the foals out in the fields. While you're not allowed to pet the stallions, you can pet the babies and their mothers as much as you want. You'll shuttle out to these horses, but be prepared to do some walking.

Address: 3750 Paris Pike #1, Lexington, KY

The beautiful grounds of Gainesway Farm are unmatched by any of the other farm tours near these parts. It's secluded and private, yet is open to all for tours of the farmland. Unlike other farms, you can walk the grounds independently of your tour guide, so you can have a more leisurely tour viewing the architecture, the horses, and the crafted gardens.

Tours of the Stallion Complex are also cheaper than most of the other horse tours around, costing only $20 a ticket. Not bad for an A+ experience!

Address: 2800 Bowman Mill Rd, Lexington, KY

Mill Ridge is a fun horse tour that lets you pet all of the horses. For this reason alone, it might be one of the better tours for animal lovers and children. At an affordable $25 a ticket, you'll be able to wander the grounds with your tour guide, ask questions about breeding and horse racing.

You'll be able to meet two racehorses with titles to their name, including Oscar Performance who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf, and Aloha West, who is the Breeders Cup Sprint winner!

If you're looking for a place to stay in the heart of horse country, we at the Bed and Breakfast Association of Kentucky can steer you in the right direction.
