The Red River Gorge is located approximately an hour and 20 minutes east of Lexington, mostly located within the Daniel Boone National Forest. It is a stunning area, featuring huge cliffs & sandstone arches that have been carved by the raging Red River, and surrounded by lush forests.  This intricate network of canyons features several sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and natural bridges. In addition, there are more than 100 natural sandstone arches located in the Red River Gorge, which is the largest group of sandstone arches east of the Rocky Mountains. Thanks in part to these incredible cliffs, Red River Gorge is also one of world's most popular rock climbing and hiking areas. One of the most popular places within the Red River Gorge is Natural Bridge State Park.  If you're looking for somewhere to go hiking this fall, there are over 10 miles of trails to explore here, as well as a myriad of other trails throughout the Daniel Boone National Forest and Red River Gorge area.  As the name of this particular park suggests, the most popular destination within this area is a natural sandstone rock bridge that has been formed over millions of years.  This incredible formation

towers 65 feet in the air, and spans a 78 foot gap.  It's not the biggest bridge in the area, but it's certainly one of the most popular, and therefore a must-see if you're in the Red River Gorge area.  Other popular places in the Red River Gorge Area include Balanced Rock, Chimney Top Rock, and the Sky Bridge. Getting out and hiking isn't for everyone, but luckily there are other ways to enjoy the gorge as well.  There's a 46-mile Scenic Byway that travels along a one-lane former railroad tunnel, before heading into the gorge.  It's a beautiful adventure, well-worth taking the next time you're in the area.
