Check into First Farm Inn, an 1870s vintage German farmhouse, renovated with all the amenities found in top-flight hotels including free wifi. Explore the historic pegged barn with hand-hewn beams and tobacco rails. After your all-you-can eat healthy breakfast, wind down one of Kentucky’s wild and scenic highways to tour Dinsmore Homestead, an 1840s farm run by five generations of women, including the first female congresswoman in the U.S. See an elk shot by Teddy Roosevelt and sent to the Dinsmores. Continue your journey along the Ohio River to Rabbit Hash General Store, maintained as the community core since the 1830s. Enjoy a sarsaparilla or root beer (or real beer) and some music if someone is playing around the stove or on the outdoor stage. After a little respite, head a few more miles SE to Big Bone Lick State Park, where the largest collection of mammoth and mastodon skeletons ever found in the U.S. were discovered in the early 1700s. Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to bring bones back to the White House, where he put together the skeleton of the long-extinct giant ground sloth.
