Our 6 Favorite Kentucky State Parks

Though there are plenty of great Kentucky State Parks to visit, and lots of other great places that don't make that list, including the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, we managed to narrow our list down to 6 of the best Kentucky State Parks.  You simply must add at least one, and preferably all of them, to your itinerary.

Without further ado, here are our 6 favorite Kentucky State Parks.  Did your favorite make this list?

  • Red River Gorge Geological Area is made up of nearly 30,000 acres along the Red River in Daniel Boone National Forest, outside Lexington. The park offers over 600 miles of hiking trails, the most popular of which the Sky Bridge trail. The park also has trails for biking and 4-wheeler riding, and the many lakes and rivers make the park a popular destination for canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, and swimming. You can even ride a zipline above the forest, or go boating through the underground caves.

  • My Old Kentucky Farm isn't just a folk song - it's also a state park full of history to explore near Bardstown. The centerpiece of the park is the Rowan family home, a 200-year-old plantation mansion with beautifully landscaped grounds. The park offers guided tours of the mansion and grounds, and the surrounding land is also home to a golf course and a campground. To learn more, check out our latest blog post on the subject.

  • The Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Corbin is often called the "Niagra of the South" - and with good reason. The Cumberland Falls is a 60-foot tall, 125-foot wide spectacle of nature that, during a full moon, is one of the few places in the world you can see the rare Moon Bow. The surrounding park also has trails for hiking and horseback riding, rafting expeditions, and campgrounds.

  • Pine Mountain State Resort Park is home to 12 miles of hiking trails exploring Honeymoon Falls, Timber Ridge, and more. When you're not hiking the mountain, the park is also home to a golf course and (during the summer) a mini-golf course, and a public amphitheater that frequently hosts performances from local theater groups.

  • Kingdom Come State Park is situated at the top of Pine Mountain, with 8 overlooks offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape from an elevation of 2,700 feet. The park has trails available for hiking and mountain biking, as well as fishing and pedal boating in the lake. We recommend you bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while looking out over the ridge.

  • Mammoth Cave National Park boasts 12 miles of underground trails and nearly 70 miles of surface trails to explore. The park is home to the largest known cave system on earth, with dozens of tours available to survey the diverse sections of the caves. Aboveground, the park is home to hiking and biking trails through dense forest, and boating, canoeing, and kayaking on the rivers.
